This year’s conference might keep you busy, but what is there to do after 17:00, when you leave the World Forum after hours of debate? Even in the winter, The Hague offers a range of activities to keep conference participants occupied in between THIMUN hours. Whether it is with new friends made, or a whole school group (advisors included), here are four activities to enjoy locally.
Van Schaik Stroopwafels
Located in Den Haag Centrum, these stroopwafels are a local favorite, made with the Schaik family recipe since 1960. In addition to buying their delicious stroopwafels, visitors can view the bakers as they create the waffles, offering a tasty view into an important part of Dutch culture. However, if you want to get a chance to buy these waffles, hurry up after leaving the forum! The store closes at 18:00, but if you cannot make it, their stroopwafels are available to purchase online.
Skyview de Pier
This activity is a must-do for a week spent in The Hague. Hanging 50 meters above the North Sea is a must when visiting the Scheveningen neighborhood. This Skyview de Pier ferris wheel located on the pier, is open year-round and is even heated in the winter. A one person ticket is €15, with closing hours varying between 20:00 and 22:00 during the week.
Noordeinde Royal Palace
Built in 1533, the Noordeinde Royal Palace has served as a place of residence and work for many generations of Dutch royalty. Situated on the shopping street of Noordeinde, this palace serves as a great stop for memorable pictures. Although touring the interior becomes difficult in the winter, the stunning exterior and classical architecture can be admired any time of the day.
The Mauritshuis Art Museum
Home to hundreds of Dutch paintings, this museum is more of a weekend activity, since its opening hours only run from 10:00 to 18:00. Most notably, this museum houses the renowned “Girl with a Pearl Earring” painting, by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. Admission is €19.50 for adults, but free for anyone under 18!
