Society is often regarded as the architect of rules, which impose the construct that people must follow them, warning of the repercussions should the laws be broken. From a young age, individuals are ingrained with the principles of right and wrong with the understanding that stealing a friend’s possession can in turn cause their parents to scold them. In turn, it provides negative feelings toward breaking these rules, but does it create enough mental dissonance that it in turn creates peace?
Woven seamlessly into everyday life, laws emerge as almost vital in running a safe, non- hazardous society. Aligned with these rules is justice, put in place to administer the laws, and put in place to maintain the reassurance that everything will remain in order. Yet, when violations of justice occur, injustice arises, leading to protests and uproars from people demanding a change.
Instances of injustice can be found in many different forms such as racism, gender inequality, discrimination, and many others. These illustrations present the need for a nuanced approach to rules, recognizing that an inability to change the rules may jeopardize global peace. Understanding that following the rules leads to peace and no trouble involved, why do the laws need to be changed in order for people to feel comfortable living? Essentially, people aspire to lead their lives unhindered, and free from conforming to society’s standards.
The evolution towards a peaceful world starts with the re-establishment of laws. Striking a balance between order and change is paramount, and thus realizing that a rigid adherence to rules may stifle progress and perpetuate injustices. Ultimately, the quest for a peaceful existence in this world rests in the hands of those who strive for it to happen.
