MUNITY asked a few chaperones and MUN directors to compile their best advice and warnings. To the next generation of THIMUN chaperones and directors, here is the only guide you need to prevent disasters during THIMUN week!
Tip #1: ETA is Always 30 Minutes Earlier
The most common issue we’ve heard is tardiness. Teachers have shared their troubles about the lack of punctuality— be it dinner reservations or catching trams every morning. The solution? Tell your students the time to meet is thirty minutes before the actual meeting time.
Tip #2: Don’t Get Run Over (By Trams or Buses Or Cars)
Teachers, we empathize with you—there are not enough crosswalks for an influx of 3000 students on the roads of The Hague. The safety of the students, of course, always comes first. Pay attention to the crossing guards, they usually know what they’re doing.
Tip #3: Check Block Blast Screen Time
Cell phones are distracting. They rob students of the multitude of opportunities that THIMUN offers. Catch your students red-handed by checking their Block Blast screen time, an app that has had all the delegates in a stronghold recently.
Tip #4: Simplify Communication
Create an easily accessible group chat (not email, not Google chat) to get frequent updates on everyone’s locations and make subsequent plans.
Tip #5: Embrace Your Adult Freedom
The Hague is a multicultural hotspot. Take advantage of it! Roam all the sights, taste all the food, greet all the people—we only live once, after all.
The last day of THIMUN is always bittersweet, not only for the students but also for the teachers. They will miss seeing students interact and get involved in important global issues, and the happiness lighting up proud faces, when students exceed their expectations.
But on a more serious note, they will miss the stroopwafel stand.
