A Taste of The Hague
By Paula Knapp
Every year, since 1968, thousands of students from around the globe find their way to The Hague, to partake in the THIMUN Conference at the World Forum. Although everyone’s day is jam-packed with resolutions, speeches, and debates, at 17:00 each delegate is set free to roam the city. Some may wish to retreat to their glamorous hotel rooms to order fast food through Uber Eats, while others may prefer exploring The Hague and what it has to offer. If one chooses to take a detour into the city center, the options are seemingly endless. From Hamburgers at every corner to falafels and hummus at the Amier Lebanese Restaurant, which is conveniently open until 23:00 at night.
Since THIMUN ends relatively late, some of the attractions and tourist spots may have already closed their doors for the day. Luckily, De Pier Scheveningen does not shut down until 22:00. This 382 meter long historical Pier offers many different activities to enjoy, specifically, delicious food. The restaurants provide many foods to dig into, from healthy juices and salads, to authentic Italian cuisine. The Pier Pancakes is a perfect dessert option, offering exactly that, Pancakes. Riding the giant SkyView ferris wheel is a must, since it is the number one thing to do in Scheveningen according to Tripadvisor.
Staying on a cultural course, the Harbor, which is only a short 20 minute walk from the world forum, is a dutch favourite. It has much to offer, from greek pita to dutch fries, specifically enjoyed with a peanut sauce. The Hague is known for its Indonesian food, due to the fact that Indonesia was the largest former Dutch colony, many Indonesians have settled there. Over the years, the Hague has become a hotspot for these cultural restaurants. As local favourites, and in close proximity to the World Forum, Poetri Ajoe and Toko Manisan Den Haag are a delight to visit.
As the nervousness of working alongside others at THIMUN slowly ebbs into enjoyment, some of these options could be explored with newfound friends or old companions.
