What’s going on in SPCCH1?
By Mateo Lung
Culture is the central theme at this year’s THIMUN conference, and the Special Committee for Cultural Heritage 1 (SPCCH1) truly embodies that concept. Delegates are addressing the threat of language loss and promoting language diversity, debating the return and restitution of cultural artefacts to their countries of origin, and exploring the role of digital innovation in cultural heritage preservation. These topics are fascinating, and the gusto with which THIMUN’s delegates investigated them was impressive.
SPCCH1 has a vibrant energy. The room’s atmosphere was palpable and delegates engaged in spirited debate. It was intriguing to see the variety of viewpoints expressed and the eloquence with which those ideas were explored.
Most notably, delegates discussed the funding and logistical challenges of returning artefacts to their ancestral homes. The topic was enthralling, and the zest with which the talented delegates spoke was wonderful. The whole committee was marked by a palpable sense of work ethic and grit.

Evita, one of the special committee chairs, was emblematic of this sentiment. She said she enjoyed the experience and seemed to relish her role, citing that, despite the difficulties of ensuring the delegates maintained decorum, her motivation and love for the job powered her through. After the interview, she emphasized the importance of lobbying and respecting the chairs.

While waiting in the approval panel, Sophie Behan, the student executive coordinator for the approval panel, outlined the intricacies of the committee:
“As soon as the chairs have looked over the resolutions, they submit them on the web app and send their delegates here. We look over any grammar, making sure that they are ready for debate: capital letters, quick things to change, and making sure everything is ready to go. I solve any issues and make sure that every resolution is logged.”
In conclusion, SPCCH1 and the approval panel are stellar examples of the Model UN community and an amazing reminder of what Model UN could and should be.
