Discussions and Debate at GA1
By Mariya Dembytska
The General Assembly is often seen as one of the most representative organs at the UN: it is a space that puts forward policies and decisions, turning concerns into collective calls for action. The topics on GA1’s THIMUN agenda range from measures to protect international shipping and the threats of climate change to the protection of cultural heritage in armed conflicts.
The first topic focuses on measures to protect international shipping in the Red Sea, a vital corridor that handles around 15–20% of global trade and is currently threatened by regional conflicts. Delegates proposed solutions to strengthen maritime security without escalating existing tensions.
The second topic examines the impacts of climate change on international peace and security. The chair highlighted that delegates recognize issues beyond the surface; they noted the secondary challenges that stem from it, such as resource shortages and migration.
The third and final topic, the protection of cultural heritage in armed conflicts and occupied territories, has not yet been debated, but delegates are very excited to discuss it soon.

The room itself received a lot of praise: the KWA Theatre is the most spacious room at the World Forum. Its striking atmosphere gives GA1 the importance and gravitas it deserves. However, this often causes challenges: admins say the room is difficult to guard due to its size. “During the opening ceremony we could feel heat coming from the doors, it was so crowded!”
Finally, everyone at GA1 has one piece of advice: enjoy the conference to the fullest while it lasts!
