Getting Around The Hague
By Ben Ferguson
One of the great things about THIMUN is the complimentary public transport pass you receive with your accreditation. The Hague, like all Dutch cities, boasts an extensive public transport system. It has a reliable bus service and a suburban rail line similar to a metro called RandstadRail, but most convenient is the tram system connecting almost all parts of The Hague. We have a tram stop right on our doorstep here at The World Forum.
Cycling is a huge part of European culture, especially Dutch culture. It’s very easy to cycle everywhere in the city, particularly with the availability of rental bikes from local shops like Black Bikes, which is just an eight minute walk from The World Forum. There is a public transport bike rental service; however, it requires a subscription, so it won’t be as convenient for a short stay such as THIMUN. These bikes are called OV-fiets and can be picked up from stations like Den Haag HS, Den Haag Centraal, Den Haag Laan van NOI and Den Haag Mariahoeve. It’s important that you get permission from your tutors before cycling into the Dutch sunset.
The Hague is also a very walkable city. It’s quite compact, meaning almost everywhere is accessible on foot. As mentioned regarding cycling, it can be hard to get used to bikes coming from all directions, differentiating between cycle paths and footpaths and understanding that bikes have right of way in the Netherlands. On your first day or two you might find yourself in a few close calls with angry cyclists. To avoid these unwanted confrontations, here are a few tips:
- The cycling lane is almost always the red sector.
- Recognize that cyclists have right of way (don’t expect them to stop for you).
- Make sure to look left, particularly if you are from a country that drives on the left.
- Watch and learn from locals.
- Don’t be on the phone while walking, cycle lanes creep up on you!
- If it’s too late, just stand still.
