THIMUN 101: Inside a Delegate’s Briefcase
By Celia Overson and Sarah Latin
Get ready to break out your blazers and put on your business best; THIMUN 2026 is almost here! With long days, intense debate, and consistent engagement, the conference encourages both personal development and connection as much as growth in diplomacy. Whether you’re a seasoned MUN veteran or a debate novice, there are some essential tips to ensure you are always prepared. While this guide isn’t official, read along carefully to make the most of the week and enjoy everything THIMUN has to offer.
High heels… need there be a point?
The World Forum Convention Center is a pretty big place, and chances are you’re going to be walking… a lot. The right pair of comfortable shoes is going to be your best friend on all the arduous cobblestone streets in The Hague. Of course, business dress doesn’t always have comfort in mind, but bringing Band-Aids for blisters would help save your feet in a pinch! Looking professional is important, but being comfortable allows you to stay focused, confident, and ready to enjoy every moment.
Fully Charged Laptops
You are going to be relying heavily on your laptop during the conference to write notes, access speeches, and draft your resolutions. It’s important to charge your laptop the night before and carry your charger in case of an emergency.
The Morning of
Before you enter the World Forum, you want to make sure that you have three important items.
- Your badge: You must have this with you at all times; you will not be permitted to enter the World Forum without it, and replacing it if lost costs a fee.
- Your Country’s Placard: Bring this with you during debate; you will raise it during attendance and when it is time to vote or speak.
- Delegation’s Official Note Paper: This is needed for the admin to pass your notes.
Additionally, don’t forget to bring a water bottle; even though THIMUN provides water at lunch, they also have water fountains at your disposal. It is important to stay hydrated so that you have all the energy you need to be productive.
Finding Your Balance
Sleep schedules can be unpredictable, and days tend to move quickly. The goal isn’t to do everything perfectly, but to pace yourself. Short breaks, early nights when possible, and knowing when to step back help you stay energized for the moments that matter most. Caffeine can be a helpful boost, but just remember moderation goes a long way.
Delegates, DECORUM!
THIMUN has its own unspoken rules: respect the Chair, be aware of the room, and avoid unnecessary distractions during debate. These small habits will help the conference run smoothly and help keep discussions productive and respectful for everyone involved.
Confidence is Key
Most people are learning and figuring things out as they go, even if it doesn’t appear that way. Speaking clearly, participating consistently, and staying engaged often matter more than knowing every detail. Confidence is the most important item you will have at your disposal during the week. Even if you doubt yourself, fake it until you make it. I’ve learned that confidence grows quickly at conferences like THIMUN, especially when you realize how approachable and supportive the people around you are. It’s important to remember that this exciting environment rewards presence and confidence just as much as preparation.
THIMUN is going to be a new experience for a lot of people; it is fast-paced, exhilarating, and full of opportunities, and that’s what makes it so memorable. So, pack your briefcase with all the essentials, but also equip yourself with an open mind. If you pace yourself and take in the experience as a whole, it becomes less about the intensity, and more about embracing an adventure you’ll remember long after it ends. Remember: The journey is just as important as the destination, so take the time to enjoy the ride.
